New Bern Bears

New Bern was founded in 1710 by Swiss and Palatine German immigrants led by Baron Christoph DeGraffenried. The new colonists named the settlement after Bern, the capital of Switzerland and hometown of their leader. Many years before New Bern was settled, Bern, Switzerland was founded by a group of hunters who named the city after the first animal they came upon on their hunting expedition ... a bear. "Bern" is the old Germanic word for bear and the bear became the symbol of the city. The bear symbol was passed along to Bern's sister city, New Bern, and still serves as the city's mascot with bear flags and statues featured throughout the town.

New Bern celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2010 by hosting a variety of festivities. In honor of the anniversary, over 50 fiberglass and ceramic bears, sponsored and adopted by local businesses, were situated throughout the city. Once local businesses chose to sponsor and adopt a bear, a year-long process began which included selecting a local artist to design the bear's theme, and designating a display location for the bear. Since then more than 20 additional bears have been created and positioned at various locations throughout the city.

As Pete and I tracked down and photographed New Bern's bears, we found the Bear Town Bears brochure had a few errors. The correct information is noted in our Facebook Album.

Den Built-ins

At the front of the house off the foyer is a room that on the original plans was a formal dining room which was open to the great room. A formal dining area doesn't suit our style of entertaining so we walled the room off, separating it from the great room. We plan to use it as a small den for watching television in the evenings. Along one wall will be built-in cabinets because you can never have enough bookcases and storage space. It will also house Pete's big TV. The cabinet supplier and I went back and forth on the design more than a few times, but this is the end result. Den built-in elevation drawing. A New Look for the Cooper Cubes

Exterior Lighting: You Get What You Pay For

I initially selected Y Decor's 1-Light Galvanized Finish Outdoor Wall Sconce from Home Depot as our exterior lights. At $36 each, the price was right. I ordered one as a sample and am so glad I did. Y Decor's 1-Light Galvanized Finish Outdoor Wall Sconce ; courtesy Home Depot It wasn't really galvanized; it was a fake finish and cheap looking as well. The lighting selected by our builder when pricing the contract was from Kichler Lighting. They went for a modern farmhouse look and used black or oil-rubbed bronze fixtures. We're going for a more coastal vibe and want to use shiny, reflective fixtures. But I thought it would be a good idea to stay with Kichler if at all possible. And it was.
