Rules for Coffee Tables

 Several online shopping sites give the same advice about coffee tables:

  1. The height should be the same as the seat height of your sofa and chairs, but no more than one to two inches lower. Since 18 inches is the standard seat heigh for upholstered pieces, 16 to 18 inches is typically the correct height for coffee tables.
  2. The length of the coffee table should be approximately two-thirds as long as your sofa. Since my sofa is 76 inches, I need a coffee table about 50 to 51 inches in length.
  3. Allow 12 to 18 inches of space between the coffee table and the seating around it and about 30 inches to other pieces of furniture such as media cabinets or bookshelves. This will usually determine the width your coffee table should be.  Our great room can accommodate a square or rectangular coffee table.
So I am currently thinking about the Cayden Campaign Square Coffee Table in waxed natural oak and pewter from Restoration Hardware.

Whether we can accommodate a square coffee table depends on the final placement of our spool chairs -- on which side of the sofa should they be placed. Stay tuned!

Den Built-ins

At the front of the house off the foyer is a room that on the original plans was a formal dining room which was open to the great room. A formal dining area doesn't suit our style of entertaining so we walled the room off, separating it from the great room. We plan to use it as a small den for watching television in the evenings. Exterior Lighting: You Get What You Pay For

I initially selected Y Decor's 1-Light Galvanized Finish Outdoor Wall Sconce from Home Depot as our exterior lights. At $36 each, the price was right. I ordered one as a sample and am so glad I did. The lighting selected by our builder when pricing the contract was from Kichler Lighting. They went for a modern farmhouse look and used black or oil-rubbed bronze fixtures. We're going for a more coastal vibe and want to use shiny, reflective fixtures. But I thought it would be a good idea to stay with Kichler if at all possible. And it was.
