A Milestone Day

We are using the garage as a staging area for our boxes and bringing them into the house as we're ready to unpack them so we're not overwhelmed. The downside of this process is we're one of those families that believes garages are for cars, not to store stuff. Having the cars "live" in the driveway has been a trial, especially for Pete.

One car in, one to go; personal collection

So this morning was a milestone day -- one car now resides in the garage and one to go. And, yes, the Mayan fertility god (also known as a chainsaw carved pelican) made the move to North Carolina with us.

Den Built-ins

At the front of the house off the foyer is a room that on the original plans was a formal dining room which was open to the great room. A formal dining area doesn't suit our style of entertaining so we walled the room off, separating it from the great room. We plan to use it as a small den for watching television in the evenings. Along one wall will be built-in cabinets because you can never have enough bookcases and storage space. It will also house Pete's big TV. The cabinet supplier and I went back and forth on the design more than a few times, but this is the end result. Den built-in elevation drawing. Great Room Fireplace: Take 2

I wanted the fireplace in the Great Room to look like this, except with Walker Zanger Duquesa Catarina ceramic tile in Aqua instead of a marble surround. Courtesy of Southern Living However the Duquesa Catarina tile is 4-5/8" square and requires four tiles to complete the design. So we would need the surround to be at least 9-1/4" wide with a smidge more for grout. Instead, we will be eliminating the wood trim and adding a third row of tile, which is the fireplace Zuniga Interiors had proposed all along. A New Look for the Cooper Cubes

We purchased these Cooper Upholstered Cubes from Ballard Designs for the sunroom in our Oakton house and had them reupholstered in a Gabrielle Chambray, a fabric exclusive to Ballard Designs that had been discontinued before I made the decision.
